The Lofts Origin Story: Thesen Island’s Original Opening Act

Long before The Lofts Boutique Hotel welcomed travellers with its vibrant waterside charm, the building at its heart lived many lives. What stands today as one of Knysna’s most recognisable boutique hotels began as a humble timber boatshed. It was a working structure with a working purpose. It heard the first clang of hammers that shaped local yachts, felt the salt carried in by the Knysna lagoon, and witnessed a community built on boatbuilding, craftsmanship and water.

This was the original pulse of Thesen Island. It was here that the island’s story began, long before the cafés, boardwalks, studios and homes appeared. And it is here that the story of The Lofts truly starts.

A Working Boatshed with a Legacy Worth Protecting

Of all the historic buildings that once stood on Thesen Island, the original boatshed was the only one built as a solid timber structure. It carried the weight of years, and the weight of stories. It was inside this shed that the famous Voortrekker and Albatross II yachts were brought to life. These boats were not only symbols of local craftsmanship, they were symbols of South African sailing history. The boatshed was their birthplace and their guardian.

When the Thesen Island development was first envisioned, one guiding principle stood above the rest. Any progress on the island needed to honour what came before. Developers can be accused of many things, yet in this particular story, the intention was clear. Respect the environment. Respect the heritage. Respect the bones of what already exists.

The boatshed held tremendous significance to the Knysna community. Although the original structure burned down in 1966, its legacy remained part of the island’s identity. For the CMAI development team, which began reshaping Thesen Island in 1998, the importance of this heritage was non negotiable. The boatshed needed to live again. Not as a replica, but as a continuation of its story.

A Story Our Locals Are Proud To Share

The story of The Lofts is the story of the island. A place rooted in heritage, shaped by its natural surroundings and guided by a deep respect for legacy. Its layered past inspires pride and curiosity, a story the community continues to share.

The Birth of a New Way of Living

When the Thesen Island development began in 1998, the CMAI team sought a central location for an office and exhibition space to present the island’s vision to potential homeowners. Its exposed timber beams and columns created the perfect environment to display architectural models, finishes, and design elements. The exhibition space allowed visitors to imagine life on the island while connecting to its history. What had once been a place for building boats became a space for building a community.

After the island’s development was complete, the boatshed underwent a further transformation. The concept was simple but innovative: ground-floor spaces for shops and workspaces, with loft-style apartments above. Open layouts, exposed beams, timber textures, and creative corners reflected the industrial character of the original structure while introducing a fresh approach to living. This design gave The Lofts its architectural identity, combining heritage with modern functionality.

The Lofts Boutique Hotel – The Beating Heart of Knysna

The Mulder family, instrumental in shaping Thesen Island, built and continue to run The Lofts. They maintain the values instilled from the very beginning: care, community, and a strong connection to place. Guests feel these values in the building itself, in the pride of the team, and in the way spaces celebrate their history without imitating it. The Lofts remains authentic in design and in spirit.

Geographically, The Lofts occupies the centre of Thesen Island, surrounded by water and connected to boardwalks and key attractions. It is at the very site of the original exhibition centre that launched the Thesen Island development. This central location reflects more than geography; it represents The Lofts as a cultural and social hub, a place where Knysna’s history, creativity, and community converge.

The hotel also celebrates Knysna’s artisans and makers. Onsite shops, studios, and restaurants feature local talent, providing an authentic taste of the Garden Route’s creativity. The Lofts is not only a place to stay; it is a showcase of the town’s stories, craft, and culture. Each visit connects guests to the people and heritage that define Knysna.

The story of The Lofts is the story of the island. Rooted in heritage, respectful of the natural environment, and honouring the legacy of those who built it, the hotel’s layered history inspires pride, curiosity, and conversation. It is a story that locals and visitors alike want to share.

Today, The Lofts offers an experience deeply connected to its surroundings. Guests are not removed from Knysna; they are immersed in it. Loft-style rooms combine industrial textures with personal touches, while water views, on-site studios, restaurants, and shops reflect the town’s character. Every corner holds a memory, every space a story, creating an experience that is at once historical and contemporary.
