Lofts By Definition
Loft (noun)
An elevated room or open space with an industrial aesthetic: featuring exposed beams, raw textures, open layouts, and unique nooks.
It’s In Our Name
If anything, The Lofts is unique in its aesthetic. And if there were one word to describe that aesthetic, it would be “Lofts.” Travelers from near and far and locals from our close-knit community will all tell you the experience is singular: rich with imagination, innovation, and history, and very much lofts.
The Lofts is not just a name or a room description; it is a representation of our nature and a celebration of community and heritage. Of all the historic buildings on Thesen Island, the Boatshed, home of The Lofts, is the only one originally built as a solid timber structure. Today, it sits at the heart of a curated square of delightful shops, restaurants, and boutiques, alongside specialty retailers, marine and sporting stores, and the unique foodie experiences of Nest and Il de Pan. Together, they create a boutique experience that is both singularly unique and unmistakably Knysna.
Holding True To Our Heritage
When Thesen Island was first envisioned, one principle guided every decision: honour what came before. Respect the environment, the heritage, and the bones of the original island. The Boatshed, which burned down in 1966, held deep significance for the Knysna community. When the CMAI development team began reshaping the island in 1998, they made one thing clear: the Boatshed would live again, not as a replica, but as a continuation of its story.
Today, The Lofts stands as a testament to that commitment. Every beam, every open space, and every corner where nature meets architecture reflects the pride of the local community in its honoured heritage. It is a place that celebrates the past, embraces the present, and will remain devoted to preserving the character and soul of Knysna for generations to come.
